The story
The Coronation of the Virgin by the Trinity stages a genuinely striking theological image: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit together placing a crown on Mary's head, a composition that pushes further into visual daring than the more conventional single-figure pilgrimage portraits elsewhere in this collection.
Cusco workshops treated the Trinity itself as a subject worth formal experimentation — sometimes rendered as three near-identical seated figures, sometimes, as here, gathered around a fourth figure entirely. It is devotional ambition on a scale the gold-leaf technique was built to match.
