The story
This Rosary Virgin, attributed to an unidentified painter working in the Viceroyalty of Peru, made its way into the collection of the Museu Afro Brasil in São Paulo — a museum built around the African and Afro-diasporic presence in Brazilian history, and a reminder that the Rosary devotion carried particular weight in Black Catholic confraternities across colonial Latin America.
The object's current home says as much about the afterlife of these images as their original commission does: devotional paintings moved, were re-collected, and took on new meanings in new institutional contexts long after the workshop that made them closed.
