The story
The Rosary Virgin was the Dominican order's own signature Marian devotion, and paintings of her are conventionally flanked by Saint Dominic (the order's founder, credited in legend with receiving the rosary from Mary) and a second Dominican saint — here, Rose of Lima, the first canonized saint of the Americas.
Putting a European founder-saint and an American-born saint on either side of the same enthroned Virgin is a small, telling composition choice: it stakes a claim that the New World's own holiness now stood level with the Old World's.
