The story
A second surviving example of the Belén (Bethlehem) Marian type in this collection — proof that a given devotional composition was rarely painted once. Workshops kept popular formats in active production for generations, so multiple surviving versions of "the same" image, made years or even decades apart, are the rule in this tradition rather than the exception.
This particular canvas made its way into LACMA's Latin American art collection, one stop in the long afterlife these devotional objects lived once they left the households and chapels they were made for.
