The story
Unlike the shrine-portrait Virgins named for a specific pilgrimage town, the Virgin of Bethlehem is a devotional type tied to a place in the Gospel story rather than a located colonial statue — Mary as the mother who has just given birth, gowned in the same brocateado gold as her pilgrimage sisters.
The type let Cusco workshops apply their signature technique to a purely narrative, rather than site-specific, subject — proof that the gold-leaf visual language had become a general vocabulary for holiness, deployable on almost any Marian theme a patron requested.
