The story
The goldfinch is a small, specific detail with a long European pictorial pedigree: the bird was believed to feed on thorns, making it a folk symbol of Christ's eventual crown of thorns whenever it appears in a Holy Family or infancy scene. Its presence here, alongside the young John the Baptist, ties this Cusco canvas to a much older Mediterranean iconographic tradition, imported wholesale and repainted in an Andean workshop's own hand.
A quieter, domestic register — Mary, Joseph, and two children in an ordinary-feeling scene — next to this collection's grander gold-leaf icons and militia angels.
