The story
Rose of Lima — a Peruvian-born Dominican tertiary canonized in 1671 — was the first saint of the Americas, and her cult spread through the viceroyalty with an intensity matched by few other colonial devotions. This canvas shows her in a quieter register than the grand civic processions her feast day inspired: seated close with the infant Christ, a rose (her namesake attribute) never far from the frame.
Producing a Lima-born saint at all was itself an assertion — proof that holiness could originate in the Americas, not just arrive from Europe. Cusco workshops, hundreds of miles from her actual shrine in Lima, painted her constantly.
A companion piece showing Saint Martín de Porres — the mixed-race Dominican lay brother venerated alongside her — remains unsourced; see DECISIONS.md.
