The story
Thomas Aquinas — the medieval Dominican theologian whose writing shaped centuries of Catholic doctrine — was adopted as protector of the Royal and Pontifical University of San Ignacio de Loyola in Cusco, one of the colonial Andes' major seats of learning. This portrait ties the tradition's devotional painting directly to civic and institutional identity, not just parish or household worship.
Painted with the same formal, iconic frontality the workshops gave their saint portraits generally — a reminder that "saint painting" covered everything from private devotional objects to institutional emblems of authority.
